About us

Hello

If you’re looking for beautiful and hard-wearing wood that will last a lifetime, we’re here for you. We’re the LIGNIA Wood Company, based in the UK with a global presence, and we produce modified timber for construction projects and yacht decking markets. How do we do it? We take sustainably-grown FSC® softwood and modify it through resin impregnation to produce LIGNIA, which has all the performance and visual beauty of hardwoods.

We take the view it's not enough just to conform to the legalities of timber production, we go beyond that and want to create a sustainable path from managed forest to when you specify it. The end game is to ensure that architects, designers, builders, furniture-makers and specifiers all have a sustainable choice when it comes to which type of wood they use for construction or yacht decks.

If you have a question hopefully you’ll find the answer in the FAQs section, but if not then email us at enquiries@lignia.com and we’ll get back you!

It’s a great story and we’d like to share it with you.

LIGNIA and sustainability

Climate change and the increasing demand for natural resources by a growing global population, pose significant threats to sustainable development.

Wood can play an important role as a renewable material resource and in reducing climate change. Growing forests are nature’s carbon capture and storage devices. Sustainably-managed forests act as carbon sinks. As trees grow, they absorb the greenhouse gas CO₂ from the atmosphere, producing wood. This CO₂ remains locked up in the wood, even when harvested for manufacturing products and remains locked-up over the lifetime of the product. With continued sustainably-managed forests, these harvested trees are replaced with young saplings which, over the years grow and continue to lock-up greenhouse gas, maintaining the forest’s ability to act as a carbon sink.

All LIGNIA is manufactured from FSC-certified wood, harvested from sustainably-managed forests.

Our process improves the durability of wood, hence products manufactured using LIGNIA have a longer service life, thereby locking-up carbon for a longer period of time. This also reduces the demand for virgin timber, increasing sustainability in terms of the ecosystem and biodiversity. When forests are not sustainably managed, or when forested land is converted into other end uses, it has negative impact on the biodiversity, the environment and accelerates the release of greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change. This applies to many tropical forests, where certain high-value species such as teak and mahogany are overexploited, and the felling and extraction of trees can lead to significant forest damage. LIGNIA is tailored to have many properties similar to these tropical hardwoods making it a desirable and sustainable alternative.

Additionally, at end of life, LIGNIA can be used as biomass with heat and energy recovery, reducing the need to burn fossil fuels.

Vision

LIGNIA gives you a beautiful, sustainable alternative to hardwoods

Our vision is simple – if you currently specify timber for construction or yacht building, then we want you to have a sustainable alternative to the hardwoods you may be using. That alternative is LIGNIA, a beautiful, real-wood alternative (easily-available too) that performs as well as hardwoods, but which comes from sustainable FSC® softwoods.
