Lignia Jenga sets the centre of attention at TTJ Awards, London
TTJ invited Fibre7 to supply a centre piece for the tables at the annual TTJ Awards London hosted by Sarah Beeny. 40 Jenga sets were crafted from lignia bavarian, all the pieces were expertly machined by DW Mouldings the lignia logo was laser engraved down one side of the sets by Zone Creations then each block was oiled to protect and enrich the timber.
The sets made it to every table and were not too much of a distraction to the awards although very few sets were left after the event.
Lignia veneers available soon
Trials have been ongoing with specialist machine manufacturers Marunaka Tekkosho Japan to slice lignia veneer. The result is exceptionally well slices veneer 0.2mm, 0.6, and 0.8mm thick. The unique SL-135T machine has a fixed blade and the wet boards are then passed under the blade using only a friction belt. This means there is no clap required to hold the boards and the back veneer is only 2-3mm thick which is remarkably efficient.
Lignia veneer will be sliced and dried in house ready to stitch as required. The benefits of lignia veneer will be long length, consistent grade of quality flitch and a quarter sawn grain in all lignia colours.
Lignia durability testing results
Lignia has been undergoing extensive testing at MPA Eberswalde to establish its durability outdoors. One of the challenges when testing lignia is to find the appropriate test method use as the timber process does not fit exactly within established treatments because it is new and innovative. The most suitable test is to EN113 and CEN TS 15679 which included leaching tests according to EN 84 so as to determine durability in accordance with EN 350 – 1.
After seven months the results are extremely encouraging. However despite lignia having almost no mass loss with any of the three fungi, the test is being re-run against two of the fungi as the moisture content was too high and out side the permitted range of a valid test result. On the basis of current testing it is expected that lignia should achieve durability class 1 with a definitive report being published in the coming weeks.
Lignia will be promoted for exterior use specifically high value architectural applications such as windows and joinery. It will be recommended that lignia is used with an appropriate micropourous exterior coating with UV protection, test pieces in the UK have shown outstanding performance after 5 years of outdoor weathering without any additional coating being applied. The timber is showing no sign of deterioration and the colour remains strong and vibrant.
Lignia is proved termite resistant
Buildersmart Plc who operate across South Asia and India have been using lignia for stair parts, flooring, interior panels and window cladding wanted to understand how lignia performed against termites. Working with the Thai Forestry Commission studies have concluded that lignia has excellent termite resistance with an average 0% mass loss from subterranean termites compared to a 63.33% loss of the control timber.
The results are impressive as lignia has no added biocide to achieve such performance. This will now be used to create a range of products targeted at applications that require beautiful, certified timber that can withstand and resist subterranean termite attack.
